Challenges faced in Heritage Management in India and Policy Imperatives

Summary

India faces a significant challenge in comprehensively recording, documenting, protecting, and managing its vast and diverse built heritage, with a target of 500,000 structures needing to be cataloged. NITI Aayog commissioned this research to undertake a nationwide inventory and analysis of over 100,000 heritage structures, classify them by typology and ownership, and propose policy imperatives for their long-term protection and conservation. The research project is completed, providing a foundational database and policy recommendations to guide future heritage management efforts across central, state, and local levels.
