Review of solid biomass classifications

Summary

The UK government is addressing an outdated and inaccurate classification system for solid biomass in its national energy statistics (DUKES 6.1). The challenge is to update these classifications to reflect improved data sources and align with new international standards. The proposed approach involves expanding the solid biomass categories from three to four (wood, non-woody biomass, pellets and briquettes, and other solid biofuels) to better distinguish feedstocks. This initiative is currently in progress, with planned implementation for July 2026, and seeks to provide more precise data on renewable energy sources.
