This document outlines planned methodological changes to the UK's gas balances published in the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES). The core challenge is to improve the accuracy of gas loss estimations and incorporate updated data for gas consumption in the transport sector, as previous data sources became unavailable or outdated. The approach involves revising gas theft estimates to 0.1% of demand, replacing 'metering differences' with 'unaccounted for gas' data from National Gas, and modelling transport sector consumption using new Department for Transport data. These changes are planned for implementation in the July 2025 DUKES edition.
