GUIDELINES FOR DESIGNATION OF VEHICLE EXHAUST EMISSION TESTING CENTRES

Summary

Kenya faces increasing air pollution, with 19,000 annual deaths and a 21.9% rise in respiratory diseases between 2020-2021, posing a threat to public health. To address this, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) developed Guidelines for Designation of Vehicle Exhaust Emission Testing Centres, operationalizing the 2024 (amended 2025) Air Quality Regulations which mandate annual testing for commercial vehicles and biennial testing for private vehicles. These guidelines, published in October 2025, aim to establish the framework for emission testing and monitoring nationwide and are currently in the process of being implemented to improve environmental quality.
