Summary

Germany faces the challenge of systematically defining and implementing Best Available Techniques (BAT) for waste disposal in landfills to reduce emissions and contribute to climate protection, in line with the new EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED 2.0). This project by the German Environment Agency (UBA) involved comprehensively documenting the state of the art in landfill technology and conducting an inventory of German landfills. The project has been completed, providing the foundational work to prepare the BAT reference document on landfills, which will regulate future landfill operations.
