REFINE: Betrachtung von Rohstoffaufwendungen und Umweltwirkungen für die Energiewende in einem ressourcenschonenden und treibhausgasneutralen Deutschland – Teilbericht Rohstoffe

Summary

The energy transition to a climate-neutral society requires significant raw material inputs for new infrastructure, posing a challenge to understand the demand, availability, and environmental impacts of these materials both domestically and globally. This study utilized a multiregional economic model (URMOD-3R) and a life cycle assessment model to project raw material consumption for key technologies and overall, concluding that an ambitious transformation can reduce Germany's primary raw material consumption by 55% by 2050. The study finds that raw material demand for key technologies is manageable and does not hinder an ambitious energy transition.
