Summary

Germany's energy transition towards a climate-neutral and resource-efficient society raises concerns about its environmental impacts, raw material demand, and the balance between national and international emissions. This study developed a prospective life cycle assessment model to evaluate three energy transition scenarios from 2020 to 2050, revealing significant reductions in national and international greenhouse gas emissions (96-99% and at least 84% respectively). However, it also highlights increasing demand for metal raw materials and potential rebound effects in land use and cumulative energy demand by 2050 in some scenarios.
