FEED Study for Climeworks Direct Air Capture at a California Geothermal Facility with Long-Term Storage

Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy awarded the University of Illinois Grant DE-FE0032159 for a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study. The objective was to design a Direct Air Capture and Storage (DAC+S) system to remove at least 5,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, using Climeworks technology at an existing California geothermal facility. However, the project was abandoned four months after the award due to the withdrawal of the geothermal energy provider, Ormat Technologies Inc., and other partners. No funds were expended, and a cancellation letter was submitted on September 10, 2024.
