Building Performance Standards and Energy Code Alignment Technical Brief

Summary

Many new buildings designed to meet current energy codes fail to comply with emerging Building Performance Standards (BPS) due to discrepancies between design-based and actual performance metrics. This technical brief, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, proposes strategies to update energy codes. These strategies include requiring predictive modeling, aligning performance metrics, promoting the use of the Performance Rating Method (PRM), and enhancing metering and commissioning requirements to ensure new constructions are prepared for future BPS compliance.
