Summary

Brazil faces the challenge of conserving its vast biodiversity while ensuring sustainable resource use and fostering economic and social development. The National System of Conservation Units (SNUC), established by Law No. 9.985/2000, serves as the primary mechanism to integrate public and private efforts in creating and managing these units, promoting conservation, restoration, sustainable use, and the socio-economic valuation of biodiversity. The system is currently in progress and has already demonstrated significant environmental benefits, such as avoided carbon emissions, and considerable economic contributions to local and national economies through tourism, sustainable forestry, and fisheries.
