Core Research Interim Report: Assessment of Australian Pilbara Iron Ores in an Electric Smelting Furnace Process for Low Carbon Emission Steelmaking
Summary
Australia's steel industry faces the challenge of decarbonization by 2050, compounded by the high impurity content of abundant Pilbara iron ores that are unsuitable for existing low-carbon steelmaking routes. The University of Wollongong is addressing this by conducting experimental and computational research to assess the viability of using direct-reduced Pilbara iron ores in a novel low-emissions Direct Reduction – Electric Smelting Furnace – Basic Oxygen Furnace process. The project is currently in progress, having achieved initial milestones in pelletisation, H2-reduction capability development, and computational modeling of the ESF process.
