Summary

The European Union addresses the challenge of empowering consumers and enabling efficient energy services by ensuring interoperable smart metering systems and facilitating access to consumption data. This regulation establishes common interoperability requirements and transparent procedures for accessing metering and consumption data for market participants and end-customers, based on a technology-neutral "reference model" (role, information, and process model). As an implementing act, it is currently in progress, setting the foundational rules for Member States to apply, with a focus on promoting competition and avoiding excessive administrative costs in the retail electricity market.
