COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE REGIONS Grids, the missing link - An EU Action Plan for Grids

Summary

The European Union's electricity grids face substantial challenges in modernizing and expanding to meet a projected 60% increase in electricity demand and integrate 1,000 GW of wind and solar capacity by 2030. Aging infrastructure, long connection queues, and complex permitting processes threaten the clean energy transition. In response, the European Commission has launched a 14-point EU Action Plan for Grids, aiming to make grids stronger, more interconnected, digitalised, and cyber-resilient by accelerating project implementation, enhancing long-term planning, and streamlining permitting processes, with measures currently being implemented to meet 2030 objectives.
