Performance Results from DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge Field Validation

Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched the Cold Climate Heat Pump (CCHP) Technology Challenge in 2021 to address the poor performance and capacity of traditional heat pumps in very cold temperatures, which represent a significant portion of residential energy use. Through collaboration with eight HVAC manufacturers, the challenge developed and field-tested new heat pump prototypes designed to maintain 100% heating capacity at 5°F and achieve high energy efficiency. Field validation, completed in late 2024, showed a median Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 1.9 at 0-5°F, exceeding EnergyStar requirements, and four manufacturers plan commercialization by early 2025.
