Two Project Concepts on Skills Matching for an Equitable Energy Transition

Summary

The United States faces the challenge of ensuring a just transition for fossil fuel workers to new employment opportunities in the low-emissions energy sector, particularly regarding comparable pay and adequate training programs. Resources for the Future conducted an analysis to identify skill matches between fossil fuel jobs and other occupations, including those in low-emissions industries, and assessed the scope of relevant educational programs. The project is completed, having produced a working paper and an interactive data tool that reveals many potential skill matches but also highlights a significant pay gap for most alternative jobs, with some exceptions in specific low-emissions sectors.
