Final Technical Report DAISY: A Rapid Approach to Evaluating Marine Energy Converter Sound

Summary

This project developed Drifting Acoustic Instrumentation SYstems (DAISYs) to improve marine energy converter sound evaluation by minimizing self-noise and flow-noise and reducing data collection/analysis costs. The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy under award DE-EE0007823, ran from January 2017 to December 2024, achieving a significant instrumentation cost reduction of US$5,854 (from US$11,415 to US$5,561). The DAISYs demonstrated an extended battery endurance of over 20 hours and effective noise suppression, with flow-noise unlikely for frequencies above 20 Hz. A July 2024 deployment at the U.S. Navy's Wave Energy Test Site successfully localized wave energy converter noise and marine mammal vocalizations, with manufacturing plans publicly available and a commercial variant on offer.
