Over 38 million U.S. homes rely on gas furnaces, and the high costs of electrification, grid integration challenges, and consumer reluctance hinder wider adoption of heat pumps. This project addressed these barriers by developing and validating an innovative control scheme for add-on heat pump dual fuel systems that intelligently switches between heat pump and furnace for optimal economy and comfort. The completed field study and modeling showed the system's technical and economic feasibility, reducing heating costs by over 40% and cutting energy use and emissions.
