FISCAL HEALTH INDEX 2026 For the Financial Year 2023-24
Summary
Many developing countries, including Indian states, face mounting public debt and fiscal pressures, which threaten macroeconomic stability and constrain policy choices. To address this, NITI Aayog developed the Fiscal Health Index (FHI) to systematically assess and compare the fiscal performance of Indian states, guide reforms, and promote evidence-based policymaking. The second release of the FHI for FY 2023-24 covers 18 major states and 10 North-Eastern/Himalayan states, identifying top performers like Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh, and states facing persistent fiscal stress like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, based on five key pillars of fiscal health.
