Summary

This KISTEP brief addresses the critical challenge of fire and explosion risks associated with conventional liquid electrolyte-based secondary batteries, especially in electric vehicles, which require massive amounts of water to extinguish and cause severe environmental pollution. The proposed approach is the development of all-solid-state batteries, which replace flammable liquid electrolytes with solid ones, thereby enhancing safety, high-temperature stability, and energy density. Currently, this technology is in the research and development phase with significant global investment and projected rapid market growth, though it still faces hurdles like low ionic conductivity and high interfacial resistance before widespread commercialization.
