Summary

The U.S. power grid faces challenges integrating large, variable solar energy resources into a system designed for central-generation thermal plants. To address this, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiated a series of American-Made prize competitions from FY22 to FY24, totaling over $1.2 million in potential awards, to incentivize the development of advanced modeling tools for solar forecasting, net load forecasting, and distributed solar visibility. These competitions aimed to accelerate solar innovation and improve grid management, with the overall project being completed by September 2025.
