Summary

Conventional electrolyser-based hydrogen production faces challenges with low efficiencies and high costs, hindering the widespread adoption of green hydrogen. This project by the Australian National University, supported by ARENA, aims to commercialize a Direct Solar to Hydrogen (DSTH) technology that integrates solar energy conversion and water-splitting in a single module to significantly enhance efficiency and reduce costs. As of November 2025, the project is on track at its midpoint, having achieved milestones such as a 25x25 cm² DSTH module with over 17% efficiency and the successful fabrication of 50x50 cm² electrode assemblies, advancing the technology towards commercial readiness (TRL 6).
