Considerations for a Medium-Voltage DC Electrolysis Testbed
Summary
Current methods for integrating wind power with electrolyzers for hydrogen production rely on AC distribution, which suffers from inefficiencies, higher costs, and reliability issues due to multiple conversion stages and transformer dependence. This report presents a study on the feasibility of using a medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) power distribution system to directly connect wind generation to electrolyzers, aiming to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and simplify the system. Future work includes enhancing fault protection strategies, scaling the system to 25 MW, and conducting hardware implementation at NREL's Flatirons Campus, indicating the approach is currently in the planning and development phase.
