KISTEP 브리프 30: 우리나라 여성과학기술인력 현황 (2020년도 여성과학기술인력 활용 실태조사 보고서 요약)
Summary
South Korea faces the challenge of understanding and addressing the underrepresentation and disparities experienced by women in science and technology (S&T) roles, including employment, leadership positions, and research output. To address this, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Institute for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology annually conduct a comprehensive survey on the utilization of female S&T personnel across academia, public research institutions, and private companies. The 2020 survey revealed that women constitute 21.5% of the total S&T R&D workforce, with lower rates in regular employment (64.7% for women vs. 82.5% for men), managerial positions (12.0%), and as lead researchers for projects (11.4%). These findings serve as critical data for developing policies to foster and support female S&T talent.
