Summary

Accurately monitoring city-scale greenhouse gas emissions is challenging because satellites measure atmospheric impact rather than direct emissions, requiring complex modeling to differentiate anthropogenic from natural sources. The CoCO2 project, funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 program, is developing a prototype Copernicus CO2 service to address this by integrating satellite and in-situ observations with Earth System models. This in-progress initiative aims to provide consolidated fossil fuel emission estimates to support climate mitigation efforts.
