Summary

Australia is addressing the challenge of efficiently recovering valuable elements from steelmaking slags, which are complex waste streams currently underutilized as secondary resources. Macquarie University is developing an integrated approach combining hydrometallurgical and high-temperature treatments to extract elements like calcium, iron, and phosphorus from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag. The project is currently at TRL 4, showing promising laboratory-scale results for selective element recovery and demonstrating the technical feasibility of the proposed strategies.
