Summary

Kenya's agricultural sector faces a significant challenge from the Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD), which severely reduces cassava yields and quality, impacting food security and farmer livelihoods. To combat this, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) proposes introducing genetically modified cassava varieties resistant to CBSD into National Performance Trials (NPTs) at seven designated sites. This initiative is currently in the planning phase, with an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report completed in February 2022 to evaluate potential impacts of the proposed trials.
