Moving Beyond Direct Load Control: A Maturity Model for Realizing the Promise of Demand Flexibility

Summary

Despite significant growth in advanced meter deployment and an urgent need for demand flexibility (DF) to support renewable energy integration and manage load growth, utilities have largely failed to move beyond basic direct load control programs. To address this stagnation, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has developed a comprehensive DF maturity model. This framework aims to help utilities and regulators assess current capabilities across 34 specific areas and prioritize investments for continuous improvement in demand flexibility programs.
