The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical need for South Korea to secure its own technological capabilities and supply chains for infectious disease vaccines and treatments to ensure national security. The proposed approach involves developing advanced platform-based vaccines (like mRNA), building antigen libraries, and establishing rapid efficacy assessment, antibody treatments, antiviral drugs, and swift candidate discovery and toxicity evaluation platforms. This national effort is currently in progress, aiming to establish an early response system capable of deploying vaccines within 100 days of an outbreak, similar to international initiatives.
