EVALUATION OF BUILDING 23-117, ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, NEVADA NATIONAL SECURITY SITE, NYE COUNTY, NEVADA

Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office (NNSA/NFO) is modernizing facilities at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in Nye County, Nevada. As part of this effort, a cultural resources report was prepared in October 2022 to evaluate Building 23-117, the Administration Building, for individual eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), as it is a Category I contributing element to the NRHP-eligible Mercury Historic District (MHD). Constructed in 1982 (40 years old) with dimensions of 150 feet by 75 feet and 23 feet high, Building 23-117 was dedicated in April 1983. Historically, the Mercury site saw significant growth from an initial design capacity for 412 people to over 1,100 by late 1951, leading to a $6.7 million expansion project and a 1962 request for $15 million for permanent construction. The evaluation concluded that Building 23-117 is not individually eligible for the NRHP under any criteria, nor does it possess exceptional significance for its age, but it remains a contributing element to the MHD.
