The global steel industry, particularly iron production, is a significant contributor to CO2 emissions, making it challenging to decarbonize the steel value chain for Pilbara iron ore. The NeoSmelt joint venture, supported by A$19.8 million from ARENA, is developing a lower-carbon steelmaking alternative using Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) technology with an Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) through a pilot plant in Western Australia. This initiative is currently in the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage, with an aim to share learnings and intellectual property to accelerate wider adoption of the technology.
