Dual Purpose – Heating & Cooling – Thermal Battery for Flexible and Energy-Efficient Heat Pump Systems Final Technical Report (FTR)
Summary
Existing heat pump-thermal energy storage (HP-TES) systems are inefficient, requiring separate setups for heating and cooling, which increases costs and footprint. This research successfully developed a dual-mode HP-TES system using phase-change materials (PCM) to serve as both a heat source and sink, significantly enhancing energy efficiency by reducing compressor load. The project is completed, having prototyped and tested the system to demonstrate substantial cooling demand reductions (up to 30%) and even greater heating demand reductions (up to 65%), alongside a commercialization plan.
