Implementation of a turbine farm model into the Energy Exascale Earth System Model for investigation and quantification of global climate impacts

Summary

The challenge is that the full effects of widespread wind farm deployment on Earth systems are not well understood. Sandia National Laboratories has addressed this by integrating wind farm models into the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) to simulate the impacts of momentum extraction from atmospheric flow. This capability is in progress, allowing scientists to quantify long-term global climate impacts such as changes in precipitation, extreme weather, and jet stream location.
