Massachusetts and New England Sustainable Aviation Fuel Study

Summary

Massport aims to achieve Net Zero by 2031, primarily by reducing aviation emissions from Boston Logan International Airport, which accounted for 92% of their 2019 emissions. To address this, they commissioned a study to assess the technical and economic potential of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and use in the New England region, including a comprehensive biomass feedstock assessment and logistics evaluation. This initiative is in progress, with the study identifying a theoretical maximum biofuel potential of 850 million gallons of gasoline equivalent per year and highlighting logistical challenges for integrating regionally produced SAF into existing infrastructure.
