Summary

Amid global energy supply instability and the drive for carbon neutrality, South Korea recognizes the need for energy self-sufficiency and next-generation nuclear technology. The government is actively pursuing the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), including an innovative SMR standard design project slated to start in 2023 with a 270 billion KRW investment, and has commenced the Munmu Daewang Research Institute in Gyeongju from 2021 with 300 billion KRW for core technology R&D and demonstration. These initiatives are currently in progress, aiming to secure advanced nuclear capabilities and achieve national energy goals.
