Highly Efficient Regeneration Module for Carbon Capture Systems in NGCC Applications
Summary
SRI International developed and tested an advanced regeneration module to enhance its Mixed-Salt Process (MSP) for carbon capture from natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) flue gas, aiming for a 95% or higher CO2 capture rate. The project successfully demonstrated approximately 95% CO2 capture in bench-scale tests over 224 hours, with an average experimental energy usage of 3.5 MJ/kg CO2 for recovery from a 5% CO2 feed. Optimized modeling for a 95% capture rate indicated a total heat duty of 3.15 MJ/kg CO2 for the dual absorber system and 3.18 MJ/kg CO2 for a simplified single absorber configuration. The techno-economic analysis for the simplified flowsheet showed a Levelized Cost of Electricity of $67.9/MWh and a CO2 capture cost of $64.43/tonne at 95% capture, and $63.55/tonne at 99% capture, successfully raising the technology's readiness level from 2 to 4.
