A Study of Emerging Ancillary Service Markets in Non-Restricted Regions of the Western Power Grid

Summary

The Western United States faces challenges integrating increasing renewable energy into its power grid, requiring new ancillary services to maintain system reliability. This study by NREL and the University of Colorado at Boulder aimed to provide transparent information on emerging ancillary service markets to aid in efficient system planning. As a result of this research and related efforts, a voluntary Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) was implemented in the Western Interconnection, which has generated nearly $1 billion in savings since 2014.
