Summary

The UK's current water environment monitoring struggles to differentiate environmental change from pressure-specific data and lacks comprehensive information on the environment's societal and economic value. To address this, the government is funding the Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) programme, which is developing new national-scale surveillance networks and natural capital indicators to provide a holistic view of water body states, trends, and benefits. This large and complex programme is currently in progress, being phased in over the next few years, with its data expected to inform future reporting.
