Summary

Kenya is addressing a severe waste management crisis, including a rapidly growing volume of hazardous e-waste (51,300 tons annually), by implementing an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is seeking partners to design and operationalize a comprehensive waste collection and management system, including pre-verification of imported goods and collection of advance EPR fees. This initiative, currently in the tender phase, aims to reduce waste, promote recycling, and establish a circular economy across all 47 counties over an initial period of 36 months.
