Moisture Performance of Unvented Attics With Vapor Diffusion Ports and Buried Ducts in Hot, Humid Climates

Summary

In hot, humid climates, energy-efficient building strategies, such as burying HVAC ducts in attics, can inadvertently increase moisture and condensation risks. This study investigated an approach using unvented attics with vapor diffusion ports and buried ducts to address these moisture challenges while maintaining energy efficiency. While initial field experiments in Florida showed no signs of mold or rot over nine months, modeling indicated that the strategy's effectiveness is highly sensitive to occupant behavior and climate conditions, suggesting further research is needed before widespread adoption.
