Evaluation of Rooftop Solar Potential in Chernihiv and Lviv, Ukraine, and Efficacy of High-Resolution 3D Data Digital Twins
Summary
This analysis by USAID-NREL evaluated the rooftop solar potential in Chernihiv and Lviv, Ukraine, leveraging high-resolution 3D data and digital twin methodologies. The study estimated a total direct current (DC) capacity of 332 MW for Chernihiv, with an annual energy production of 376,197 MWhDC, and 873 MW for Lviv, producing 995,530 MWhDC annually. The impact of Russia's invasion was also quantified, with an estimated loss of 20.15 MWDC capacity in Chernihiv and 34.49 MWDC in Lviv due to building destruction. The use of simulated Digital Surface Models (DSMs) was found to be a cost-effective alternative for nationwide analysis, showing a capacity difference of 45 MWdc and 51,977 MWh in annual energy production, valued at approximately US$2.6 million, compared to high-resolution data, providing a foundation for Ukraine's energy transition.
