WATER BUDGETING in Aspirational Blocks

Summary

India faces significant challenges in water security due to scarcity, uneven distribution, and competing demands, threatening economic stability and food security. NITI Aayog, in partnership with GIZ, developed the web-based "Jalagam" (Varuni) water budgeting application to provide a data-driven approach for systematic accounting of water inflows, outflows, and availability. The initiative is currently in progress, having successfully piloted across 18 aspirational blocks to demonstrate enhanced water security and sustainability, with plans for national-level uptake to strengthen informed decision-making.
