India faces significant challenges with child malnutrition and mortality, largely due to insufficient sanitation infrastructure. This study, conducted by NITI Aayog, analyzes data from 28 states and one union territory to understand how sanitation and sewage systems impact child health, particularly stunting, underweight, and wasting. The research findings indicate that improved sanitation, especially shared toilets, significantly reduces malnutrition and indirectly child mortality, while open defecation exacerbates these issues, underscoring the potential of initiatives like Swachh Bharat Mission to improve child health.
