Solid-State Mixed-Potential Electrochemical Sensors for Natural Gas Leak Detection and Quality Control

Summary

The University of New Mexico and SensorComm Technologies, Inc. completed a four-year project (April 2020 - March 2024) to develop AI-driven IoT multi-gas sensors for methane and hydrogen leak detection in natural gas infrastructure. The solid-state electrochemical sensors achieved low detection limits of 3 ppm for methane and 1.5 ppm for hydrogen. Machine learning algorithms enabled mixture identification and quantification with over 97% accuracy, processing data at >1 Hz. Field tests at Colorado State University's METEC facility successfully measured methane from a 20 SLPM underground leak and detected a 2 SLPM hydrogen leak above ground at 32 feet. The project yielded six publications and one patent application, with ongoing commercialization efforts.
