Summary

The UK government plans to update its infrastructure planning rules for renewable energy. Currently, solar projects are often capped just below 50MW to avoid a more complex planning process, a threshold set in 2008 which no longer reflects technological advancements. The proposal aims to increase the solar threshold to 100MW and reintroduce onshore wind into the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) regime at a 100MW threshold, streamlining the planning process for larger renewable energy projects to support decarbonisation. This initiative is currently in the planning stage, with implementation expected by the end of 2025.
