Summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) developed a 2022 Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Plan (VARP) to manage climate-related risks across its 36-square-mile site in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The assessment identified 141 mission-critical facilities and evaluated them against 10 climate change hazards, generating 1,410 individual risk scores. Five high-impact hazards were prioritized, with the highest average VARP Risk Score of 8.8 for specialized equipment facing extreme precipitation. Out of 48 proposed resilience projects, 19 solutions were recommended for implementation and annual tracking, addressing vulnerabilities across all asset types and hazards with medium or high risk scores. The VARP data and processes will be updated every four years.
