Summary
The Government of India is developing the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) framework to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by pricing them through carbon credit trading. The Ministry of Power notified the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) on June 28, 2023, under Section 14 of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. Draft procedures for accreditation of carbon verification agencies and the compliance mechanism for the CCTS are currently being finalized. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency, on November 7, 2023, requested comments on these drafts by November 22, 2023, to operationalize the national carbon market.
