Summary

Natural gas transmission pipelines experience methane leaks due to failures in field-applied corrosion coatings over girth welds. This project developed and evaluated metallic field protective coatings (FPC) to enhance corrosion resistance and reduce these emissions. The document provides guidance for applying two types of FPC (Steel alloy B9 or Aluminum alloy 5356) during pipeline construction, based on electrochemical modeling and small-scale field tests, with the aim of reducing future methane leaks.
