Summary

Brazil's coral reefs, vital for marine biodiversity and coastal communities, are severely threatened by climate change (bleaching, acidification) and local pressures like pollution and overfishing, jeopardizing their ecological functions and the livelihoods of billions globally. Brazil is establishing the National Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Coral Reefs (ProCoral) via a 2025 decree. This strategy aims to guide public policies for the conservation, sustainable use, and recovery of these ecosystems, enhancing their resilience and integrating ocean-based climate actions into national goals. This is a planned initiative, officially established by a decree set for June 3, 2025, with implementation to be coordinated by ICMBio through the PAN Corais action plan.
