Flagship Report: System Strength Remediation Darlington Point Energy Storage System

Summary

Australia's National Electricity Market faces the challenge of integrating more renewable energy while maintaining system strength, traditionally provided by conventional generators. The Darlington Point Energy Storage System (DPESS), a 25MW/50MWh battery with advanced grid-forming inverters, was developed to address this by providing essential network stability services. Commissioned in September 2023, DPESS has successfully demonstrated its grid-forming capabilities, becoming the first project of its kind to navigate the connection process with grid-forming controls from the outset and securing a Network Support Agreement with Transgrid.
