Understanding secondary heating behaviours

Summary

The UK aims to reach net zero by 2050, with residential heating contributing 17% of carbon emissions. This research investigated why and when UK households use secondary heating, and how this behaviour might shift with the adoption of heat pumps, through qualitative interviews with 45 participants. The study found that secondary heating is primarily used to compensate for deficiencies in primary heating, often during peak electricity demand, and while most households are not considering reducing its use, heat pumps show potential for reduction in certain situations.
